I did something this week that I have never done before in 30+ years of running. I went to a doctor about a pain I was having. And, I am so glad I did.
To start with, the pain did not start out as a running injury. I turned wrong at work and felt a little pull in my back. No big deal, I thought, just one of those little glitches you get from time to time.
The next day, however, when I went to run, I had a little pain in my hip. Also, not a biggie, just an annoyance. Made it through 10 miles. Then, the next week, I had to cut a 10-miler short because of the pain in my hip – it had seemed to travel down my leg a little bit.
My husband tried to get me to see someone – but I told him, no problem, I’ve had little pains in the past. I’ll just do short runs until the pain goes away. He tried to bite his tongue – but out it came……”you’re not as young as you used to be”. Believe it or not, I didn’t hit him!
I refuse to go to a doctor. It seems that the first thing that doctors tell you is to stop running. And, as anyone who knows me can tell you – that’s not going to happen.
Just did short runs for a few days – and hit the treadmill a couple of the runs, just to be on the safe side. But the pain was not going away. During the same time, I had been doing some reading on hip injuries. A majority of runners were talking about how they went to a chiropractor who did some work on them – and they never had problems again.
Well, it just so happens, that I have a friend who is a chiropractor – and he actually works on my husband. So, a call was made and I went to see him. By the way, he is a cyclist – so I had no worries about him telling me not to run!
I am SO happy to say that after a week of treatment – my hip pain is gone! Been running so much better. Seems I was a little out of alignment.
If you’ve got a little glitch that is annoying and won’t go away – I totally suggest that you make an appointment with a local chiropractor. And, it helps if he’s an athlete, also!
Run Happy!
